Dual Purpose
American Tunis sheep are a dual-purpose animal, providing both meat and wool production, although meat production is their primary use today. They produce lean, flavorful, and fine-grained meat, often described as having a delicate flavor and a desirable fat-to-at ratio. Their wool is fine, soft, and has a springy quality, with a natural reddish-brown color that is popular with hand spinners and crafters.Easy keepers
American Tunis sheep are easy to keep. They are generally calm and easy to handle, making them suitable for small farms, 4-H projects, and novice shepherds. They are excellent grazers and can thrive on a variety of forages. Originally from North Africa, Tunis sheep are well-adapted to hot and humid climates, making them a good choice for regions where other breeds might struggle. They are more resistant to internal parasites than many other breeds, which can lead to lower veterinary costs and a healthier flock.Heritage Breed
As one of the oldest breeds in the United States, dating back to the late 1700s, Tunis sheep have a rich history that appeals to heritage breeders and sheep enthusiasts. Their unique genetics make them a valuable resource for crossbreeding programs, which can improve traits like heat tolerance and parasite resistance in other breeds.
